Getting Involved

Helping your child to make a good start to their secondary education.

This video is designed to help parents and carers to get involved in their children's learning as they start secondary school. Some schools will use it with groups of parents and carers

The move from primary to secondary school is an exciting time for children as they step from one phase of education into another - a new phase that leads to increased independence in learning, and presents new challenges and fresh opportunities to achieve and make progress.

Viewing the video.

Getting involved helps you, as parents and carers, to continue the successful role played in your children's education so far. You might wish to view it yourself first before watching with your child. Use it as the basis for discussing how you can continue to support them as they start their new school, and help them to make the most of the new opportunities.

The video last for approximately 20 minutes features the well known TV and film actor James Nesbitt. It contains a number of short scenes in which you'll see parents staying involved as their children start new school, talking together and enjoying activities with their children - actions you can take so that your child gets just the right level of support, and feels just the right degree of involvement. They'll want to feel trusted and that they are able to make decisions for themselves; but they'll also benefit from a supportive hand here and there, and knowing that you remain interested and willing to help.
